Germany urges citizens to leave Ebola-hit nations

August 2014AFRICA – The German government has urged nationals to leave three countries in West Africa affected by the Ebola virus. The outbreak has now killed more than 1000 people, including a second prominent physician in Sierra Leone. Following a meeting of a crisis unit working to stem the ongoing Ebola outbreak, Germany on Wednesday updated its travel warnings for the hardest-hit regions.  “It was decided that all German nationals who are in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are called upon to leave due to the still-critical situation,” foreign ministry spokesman Martin Schäfer told reporters, adding that German medical personnel needed on the ground were “explicitly exempt.” German embassies and consulates in the three countries would remain open, Schäfer also said. Local residents are calling it an environmental disaster. A breach of the tailings pond on Mount Polley Mine sent five million cubic meters of toxic waste into Hazeltine Creek, Quesnel Lake and Polley Lake, with fears it could spread far and wide in the coming days. Residents in the area, along with visitors to waterways near the Mount Polley Mine close to Likely, B.C., have been issued a complete water ban. Affecting close to 300 homes, it extends to the entire Quesnel and Cariboo River systems up to the Fraser River, including Quesnel Lake, Cariboo Creek, Hazeltine Creek and Polley Lake. Ebola in Ghana? Two Liberians show signs of Ebola infection in Kasoa

August 2014 AFRICA – It is yet to be confirmed whether the deadly Ebola Viral Disease has found its way into Ghana but reports reaching Peace FM indicates that two persons, currently admitted at the Kasoa Poly Clinic, have shown signs of it. The two, according Peace FM’s Central Regional correspondent, Seth Mantey are from Liberia and have been residing at the Kosoa Buduburam refugee camp with their families.
